Advice on transition to eVisas

The UK Home Office is transitioning to a digital immigration system, replacing physical documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) with online records known as eVisas. An eVisa is a digital record of a person's immigration status and the conditions of their permission to enter or stay in the UK.

To access their eVisa, individuals must create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account by confirming their identity using the 'UK Immigration ID Check' app. This process requires a smartphone, a mobile phone number, an email address, and, if available, a BRP card or valid passport with the BRP number.

The shift to eVisas offers several benefits, including enhanced security, as digital records cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with, unlike physical documents. Additionally, it streamlines the process of proving immigration status at the UK border and when sharing status with employers or landlords.

Individuals who currently use physical immigration documents to prove their status and do not yet have a UKVI account are advised to create one promptly to access their eVisa. This transition does not affect one's immigration status or the conditions of their permission to enter or stay in the UK.
