What do we know about volunteering involving people with a forced migration background?

Learning from research

Go to tools

As a starting point, we have created three resource lists of existing research knowledge organised by location of research:

  1. Local research about volunteering (Yorkshire and Humber)
  2. UK-wide research about volunteering (national), and
  3. International research about volunteering (from across the world).

You can download these from the left hand side of this page.

These resources offer a collection of local, national and international knowledge relevant to those planning and delivering volunteering.

The first includes an introductory summary of some relevant research that has been produced in Yorkshire and Humber; their titles give you a taster of the topics covered in these studies:

  • “I didn’t think we’d be dealing with stuff like this”: A qualitative study of volunteer support for very disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers
  • Tourism and refugee-crisis intersections: Co-creating tour guide experiences in Leeds, England
  • Evaluating the impact of befriending for pregnant asylum-seeking and pregnant women
  • Welcoming Acts: Temporality and Affect among Volunteer Humanitarians in the UK and USA
  • Volunteering, inequalities, and barriers to volunteering: a rapid evidence review
  • Volunteering among refugees and asylum seekers: Barriers, motivations and recommendations for the voluntary third sector in Leeds.

Most of the research papers listed are free to access. If you have trouble accessing any of the resources, please contact admin@migrationyorkshire.org.uk and we can try to assist.
