Recruitment cycle: hiring
5. Hiring
Congratulations! You have identified the right candidate. The next step on your list might be to review their references and possibly run DBS checks.
People with lived experience of forced migration might struggle to provide references from their previous employment. Their workplace might not exist anymore, and their colleagues could have moved away too.
You could consider:
- Accepting a character reference from someone who knows your candidate (for example, their case worker, community leader, church leader)
- Offering a trial period (1 – 2 weeks) to check if the candidate is the right fit
- Extending a probation time
If the role requires DBS checks, please refer to the DBS guidance section of this toolkit.
